Sumeragi Hokuto is one of the main characters from CLAMP’s Tokyo Babylon, and she is a peripheral character in the sequel X (published in the United States as X/1999). She is Sumeragi Subaru’s twin sister, therefore a member of the Sumeragi clan, though she does not have the spiritual power Subaru possesses. She was born on 17 February, 1974. She is deeply eccentric and wise well beyond her years, which she easily hides beneath her bubbly, fashion-obsessed exterior. She is strong, intelligent, perceptive, open-hearted, and endlessly understanding. She never judges anybody by her own ideological criteria, which, in the incredibly homogenous society of Tokyo, is incredibly rare. She endeavors to understand everybody’s reasons for doing things others would consider heinous. She loves sewing and cooking, and states that she wants to become a good housewife someday. She sews all of Subaru’s clothes for him, along with her own matching outfits, all of which are garish, loud, insane debaucheries of 80’s popular fashion. Yet, somehow, she makes the outfits look good. Though her spiritual powers are nowhere near the level of her brother’s, she displays rudimentary abilities, such as being able to draw a pentacle with lipstick and use it to create a barrier to a psychic attack. She also has an uncanny intuition.
During Tokyo Babylon, which takes place in 1990, she is sixteen years old. She is one of a triad of main characters around whom the story evolves. She is the only person who fully understands Subaru for all his good and bad qualities, and she is able to predict, correctly, his reaction to Seishirou’s betrayal. She is also the first and only person to catch on to Seishirou’s true nature before he reveals it, though she does not tell Subaru because she did not want to believe it. In this, she shows a very human side: she wanted so badly for Seishirou to be the one who would make Subaru happy that she did not listen to her very strong instincts. She does what she must to make amends, even though she knows that she is going to her death.
In X, Hokuto has been dead for nine years, and she has been visiting Kuzuki Kakyou in his comatose state. He has fallen in love with her. She also visits Subaru after Seishirou’s death to try to comfort him.
She has yet to appear in the CLAMP alternate-universe manga serial tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, though Subaru and Seishirou both already have.
