Welcome to Sorcerer, the official fanlisting for Folken Fanel from Tenkuu no Escaflowne. A fanlisting is a collective listing of all fans of a specific something, person, character, show, or whatever, and their websites and email addresses if they so wish to distribute those. Most people use it as a hub for link exchange and general website whoring, but others just like to place their names on the list. Whatever your reasons may be for being here, please join.

About

Folken is the Strategos of the Zaibach army and an ex-member of the Zaibach Sorcerers, a group of physics-minded scientist-intellectuals who perform extreme and often cruel experiments to discover the nature of ‘fate’. He is brilliant, truly a genius of the highest order in the arenas of engineering (he designed the stealth mantles the Alseides units use), physics, chemistry, biology, strategy, philosophy—the evidence abounds throughout the series. He is also cripplingly depressed and angsty as a result (direct or indirect is unknown) of losing a battle to a dragon, and his arm in the process, which has been replaced by a mechanical-hydraulic prosthesis. It is unknown whether he was always prone to melancholy and endogenous depression and whether this was just exacerbated as a result of his loss; the vast majority of Folken as seen in the past is through Van’s idealized point of view, and little is seen of him in times of privacy or stress as a youth.

Folken was the heir to the Fanelian throne ahead of his younger brother, Van, but after the death of his father he failed the traditional rite of passage that involved slaying a dragon and bringing back the Energist to power the Escaflowne guymelef. This is when he lost his arm, and the failure weighs heavily on his psyche. He does not seem like the type of man who would be crippled by insult to his machismo, but he seems to regret the burden he has placed on his gentle younger brother and the country as a result. He would not be a traditional king by any standards, and it would have been interesting to see how he could transform his provincial, backwater homeland had he been established as monarch.

Folken appears cold and heartless throughout a great deal of the series, but this is merely a frosty exterior to a tortured and poetic soul. Ultimately, he is deeply selfless and obsessed with re-inventing the very laws of physics themselves to allow each and every person to realize his or her dreams and be happy. In a way, he is unable to reconcile the inherent tragedy in life until the end of the series, and takes on a form of escapism and fantasy peculiar to his genius and insight. If ignorance is bliss, Folken is the poster child for the very opposite condition; his awareness and insight of the sheer weight of pain weighing on the world weighs on him with equal ferocity.

At the time of the series, Folken is twenty-five years old, and he was fifteen when he had lost his arm and been taken in by the Zaibach Sorcerers and given a prosthetic arm. It is clear that this incident engrained in him the idea that science, rationality, and experimentation can cure tragedy. The vestiges of his religious devotion to this ideal drive his single-minded zeal throughout the series, telling him that the ends justify the means—even if the means involves warfare, that which he ultimately hopes to end forever. But, alas, he and Hitomi must serve a counterpart to learning the same lesson, that the future is not decided, and that human thoughts and emotions are a far more powerful force than any mechanistic or fatalistic force driving our lives.

Rules

  1. Worship Folken.
  2. Provide your name or a pseudonym and your country, at the very least. And provide a real country; Tokyo-3 and Zaibach are not real countries. These are Animefanlisting.org rules.
  3. If you provide your website, you must paste a code in some easily-accessible location. If you do not link back immediately, or if I cannot find your code because it is in some obscure or illogical location (such as a random page of a fanfic, whatever), I will add you to the listing without linking back.
  4. If you request, I will not display your email address, but you must still provide a functional one to be added to the fanlisting.
